Learners at ACT Schools have showcased their creativity and talent following a twelve-week collaboration with TEAM Collective Cymru (formerly part of National Theatre Wales), which culminated in a special performance and the premiere of a powerful music video.
ACT Schools, providing alternative education for Key Stage 4 learners across South Wales, partnered with TEAM to deliver a creative programme designed to engage and empower young people.
The initiative began with a live performance from TEAM musicians and artists, focusing on contemporary musical styles such as grime and rap. Weekly workshops enabled learners to collaborate with mentors to develop skills in video production, set design, lyric writing, and music recording.
Guided by their mentors, they wrote original songs, recorded in professional studios, and prepared for their final showcase, which included a moving live performance and the premiere of their music video, Penny For Your Thoughts.
Cei Edwards, Schools Tutor, explained the impact: “A lot of our learners have had to step into unfamiliar situations and reflect on themselves emotionally. Writing and performing can be vulnerable, but they embraced it, and we’ve seen some real talent and growth.”
One learner, Harvey Liddicoat, described the project as a turning point: “I learnt that I actually do have a bit of talent with a guitar in my hand, and I have some confidence deep down.
“Abena (Team Collective Cymru mentor) was great at keeping me quite chill and not letting me get too angry with myself. We worked very slowly and took baby steps which was really good. I will 100% keep up with the music. Me and Abena are going to start to work together again in January – hopefully do some more writing and recording.
“The project has taught me that if I put my mind to something I work quite well. Three weeks ago I wouldn’t have stood up and performed in front of everyone – but now I’ve done it.
“During the final performance I was so nervous, my legs were shaking, and my mouth was dry, but I just got on with it because I wanted to show everyone what I can do.”
Harvey plans to continue working with Abena-Mintaah Mensah, Young Person’s Coordinator, to write and record more music in the new year.
Lauren Evans, Youth Learning Mentor at ACT Schools, said: “This project has been an incredible way for our learners to uncover hidden talents, build confidence, and experience new opportunities they may never have had.”
