A group of eager ACT learners have been helping out at a South-Wales charity shop, learning some essential work skills.

The Business Services learners have all been assisting at the British Heart Foundation store in Bridgend, which specialises in furniture. Eithan Dunster, 18, Rhydian Lewis, 18, and Kallum Taylor, 19, are all on there on a placement, which runs into the New Year. They have been working three days a week in the warehouse of the store, which is located on the town’s bustling Brackla Street.

The store’s Assistant Manager, Emily Pope, who has been with BHF for seven years, said the impressive learners have been picking up some very important skills for the workplace.

The guys have grown their confidence levels since they have been with us and are learning a wide range of different skills, to make them more employable. They are really enjoying their placement and being part of the team.

“I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the guys, for being part of the amazing team we have already got. Also, ‘thank you’ for all the hard work they have put in since they have been here with us.”

Working in the warehouse, they are learning skills like lifting heavy objects correctly, along with vital guidance on health and safety. A typical day sees them arrive at 9.30am sharp, before putting on their protective boots, gloves and hi-vis safety jackets. Once ready to go, they’re then given their work instructions for the day. As well as manual handling and health and safety, they’re learning a lot about teamwork and finding solutions as part of a group.

Rebecca Broad, ACT’s Business Services Sector Lead, added:

It’s so important for ACT to build strong partnerships with charities and employers, so we can support young people towards reaching their goals. BHF allow our learners to apply classroom-based theory to the real world of work, so we’re extremely grateful to them.
