A cohort of ACT learners have recently celebrated eighteen months of progression despite difficult circumstances.

ESOL learners, who left Ukraine due to the escalating conflict, showed off their improved English language skills at a thank you gathering for their tutor.

The small gathering, including a buffet spread of authentic Ukrainian dishes, marked the end of this particular ESOL provision which took place in partnership with Oasis – a Cardiff-based charity that helps refugees and asylum seekers integrate within their local community.

At the presentation, a number of learners gave a speech in English and presented their tutor with flowers and a poster documenting their progress.

Since beginning the course, learners – with the help of ACT’s Ukrainian tutor Diana Oleksuik – have achieved their ESOL qualification as well as their Essential Skills, which includes basic numeracy and digital literacy certification.

ACT’s Head of Youth Engagement and Training, Leon Patnett, said: “These young learners have come to Wales under difficult circumstances; despite this they have embraced the challenge of learning a new language and adopting a completely new culture.

“We are very proud of what they have achieved in their time with us and to see their English improve from when they first arrived to now is incredible.

“Also at the event, we were able to confirm that the ESOL project will continue for a few more months to help some of the learners transition onto college courses from a new venue in Barry.”
